1. History and Importance
Medieval Origins
The Large Square (Piața Mare) was first mentioned in 1411 and served as the main marketplace, but also as a site for executions, proclamations, and public gatherings.
During the medieval period, it was the commercial and administrative center of the fortified city of Hermannstadt (the Saxon name for Sibiu, and Nagyszeben in Hungarian).
Baroque Transformation
In the 17th–18th centuries, under Habsburg influence, the square was transformed into a representative space, featuring Baroque-style buildings.
2. What You Can See in the Large Square
Brukenthal Palace
The former residence of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, Governor of Transylvania.
Today, it houses the Brukenthal National Museum, one of the oldest museums in Central Europe (opened in 1817).
It boasts valuable collections of European art, Romanian paintings, a historic library, and more.
Council Tower (Turnul Sfatului)
Separates the Large Square from the Small Square. You can climb it for a stunning panoramic view of the city.
It served variously as a gate tower, clock tower, prison, and fire observation post.
The Blue House (Casa Albastră)
An 18th-century Baroque building located next to Brukenthal Palace.
It hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
Sibiu City Hall (former Savings Bank)
A grand building with Neo-Gothic elements, located opposite Brukenthal Palace.
3. Cultural Life and Events
The Large Square is the heart of cultural life in Sibiu. It hosts:

The Christmas Market – considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Besides ARTmania Festival, Sibiu hosts Easter Fair, Medieval Festival, and others.

The Large Square is so spacious that it was once used for military exercises and parades.
